WASHINGTON - (Business Wire) They came to honor a loved one, to celebrate survival and to make an impact in the fight against breast cancer, both here in the Washington, D.C. metro area and across the globe. In the end, nearly 45,000 people participated in the 20th running of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® in Washington, D.C., which was rebranded as the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure® this year to highlight the growing breast cancer crisis worldwide. And in spite of the economy, today’s event raised $4.3 million to fund breast cancer programs for the medically underserved throughout the National Capital Area and abroad.

In addition to the name change, today’s Komen Global Race incorporated a new look, feel and Race day experience, aimed at creating a more personal, educational and interactive event. The morning’s festivities, emceed by CBS’s The Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez and W*USA’s Andrea Roane, opened with a parade of more than 3,600 breast cancer survivors, including 21 survivors from 18 countries, who marched into the mall between twin stages to a live performance of “Pink Warrior,” an inspiring new song by singer/songwriter Candy Coburn.

Dr. Jill Biden, a long-time advocate for breast health education and wife of Vice President Joe Biden, thanked participants, telling them that they are "paving the way for a breast cancer-free world through their efforts."

Following Dr. Biden, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, who founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure more then 27 years ago as a promise to her sister Suzy, who died of breast cancer at age 36, charged up the crowd with her inspirational story and a call for each participant to find a way to make an impact on this deadly disease. “Without a cure, in the next 25 years, an estimated 11 million will die from the disease worldwide. That's more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. We can stem the tide of the growing crises; we can share what we have learned; we can end breast cancer forever, all around the world. And with each of us doing our part, we will.”

The emotional opening program concluded with the “Ceremonial First Steps” taken by Dr. Biden, Ambassador Brinker, HRH Crown Prince Alexander II and HRH Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia, Komen president and CEO Hala Moddelmog, actress and Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure ambassador Sarah Chalke, and Komen’s 2009 Survivor of the Year Sara Fought. Adding to the impact of the ceremonial first steps, Komen Circle of Promise Ambassador and singer Lalah Hathaway performed a tribute to the runners and walkers. The opening ceremony climaxed with the placing of a seven-foot pink globe, symbolizing the organization’s worldwide commitment to a cure, on a platform above the starting line.

Finally, in a partnership with MGM studios, the Pink Panther started the Race, unleashing the throng of runners eager to make their impact. After the Race start, the Pink Panther spent the remainder of the morning with Kids for the Cure®, Komen’s special Race day program for children ages 5-12.

Thanks to the Global Race, Komen is able to impact the lives of breast cancer patients in the National Capital Area as well as women across the globe. Up to 75 percent of Race revenue will stay in the D.C. area to address breast cancer disparities for the medically underserved. Thanks to funds raised by the 2008 Komen National Race for the Cure, Komen was able to invest $3.7 million this year to fund community health initiatives that address unmet breast health needs in the Washington, D.C. area, which includes parts of Virginia and Maryland.

The remaining 25 percent will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Global Promise Fund, which addresses breast cancer incidence and mortality outside the United States with culturally sensitive education and outreach programs.

The National Presenting Sponsor of the Komen Race for the Cure Series is Yoplait®, and the National Series Sponsors are American Airlines, Bank of America, Coldwater Creek, Ford Division, FUZE Beverage, Mott’s, New Balance and RE/MAX®. Quilted Northern Ultra® sponsors the Race Series’ Volunteer Recognition Program and the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity sponsors the Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

A pink color washed over the National Mall Saturday morning, as nearly 45,000 runners pounded the pavement in the 20th Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to raise money for breast cancer research and prevention programs.

Saturday’s race raised about $4.3 million to fund breast cancer programs in the D.C. metro area and abroad. It was actually re-branded the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure this year in order to shed light on the worldwide breast cancer crisis.

The morning’s festivities opened with a parade of more than 3,600 breast cancer survivors from around the world, who marched into the mall between twin stages to a live performance of “Pink Warrior,” a new song by singer/songwriter Candy Coburn.

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden and an advocate for breast health education, told participants during the opening ceremonies that they are “paving the way for a breast cancer-free world through their efforts.”

Nancy G. Brinker, who founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 1982 as a promise to her sister Susan — who died of breast cancer at age 36 — charged up the crowd with her story and a call for each participant to find a way to help fight this deadly disease.

“Without a cure, in the next 25 years, an estimated 11 million will die from the disease worldwide,” she said. “That’s more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. We can stem the tide of the growing crises; we can share what we have learned; we can end breast cancer forever, all around the world. And with each of us doing our part, we will.”

A seven-foot pink globe — symbolizing the organization’s worldwide commitment to a cure — was also placed on a platform above the starting line prior to the race. Pink is the color associated with the fight against breast cancer.

Up to 75 percent of race revenue will stay in the D.C. area to address breast cancer disparities for the medically underserved. The remaining 25 percent will go to the Komen Global Promise Fund, which addresses breast cancer incidence and mortality outside the United States with education and outreach programs.

PRESS RELEASE  (From the Office of H.R.H. Crown Prince Alexander II of Serbia)

PRESS RELEASE
THE ROYAL COUPLE AT THE SUSAN G. KOMEN GLOBAL RACE
FOR THE CURE® IN WASHINGTON

Vice President Biden. Dr Jill Biden, Princess Katherine and Ambassador Brinker spoke in front of more than 50,000 people

Belgrade, 6 June 2009 – Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II and Crown Princess Katherine attended today the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure® in Washington D.C.
Vice President Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, served as Honorary Co-Chairs of the Global Race for the Cure. Dr. Biden, a long-time advocate for breast health education and outreach, delivered a speech to the more than 50,000 runners and walkers during the Race’s opening ceremonies.
“My husband Joe and I are thrilled to participate in the ongoing effort to raise awareness, fund research and empower people throughout the world in the fight against breast cancer,” said Dr. Biden.
Motivated by the breast cancer diagnosis of four of her friends, Dr. Biden started the Biden Breast Health Initiative, which in the past 15 years has educated more than 10,000 ninth-through-twelfth-grade girls in Delaware about proper breast health.

HRH Crown Princess Katherine gave a speech a speech with Crown Prince Alexander next to her: “My country Serbia is a country known for many things - a rich history, wonderful natural beauty, a proud and industrious people.  It is my privilege, and my husband’s privilege, to honour them by the work that we are doing on their behalf today. Unfortunately, my country is also known as a country with the highest mortality rate from breast cancer in all of Europe. The toll of this disease on the mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers - and on the families that many of them leave behind - is heartbreaking and real, made more tragic by the fact that in my country, many of these women might have been saved by early detection and early treatment.
If you wonder, at the dawn of this beautiful day, whether what you are doing really has an impact on the entire world…
If you wonder whether the steps you take in your nation’s capital today will have an impact in capitals across the globe…
If you wonder whether the lives you are saving in the United States will translate into lives saved in Serbia, or Ghana, or Brazil…then wonder no more.

A great honour of my life has been to know Ambassador Nancy Brinker - whose loss of her sister, Susan G. Komen - inspired a movement”.
In addition the Crown Princess pointed out: “We need you - us - working together, so that the women of Serbia - the women of every country -- can one day know that breast cancer has been defeated”.
Following the ceremony Ambassador Nancy Brinker delivered the speech emphasizing:” It is through a promise that my sister -- Susan G. Komen -- continues to make an impact today. Nearly thirty years ago, before breast cancer took her life, Suzy made me promise her that I would do everything in my power to find a cure for this horrible disease. That promise between two sisters became the foundation for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Nearly 30 years later, millions of people have made their own promises – to sisters, to wives, to mothers, to friends.  And we have turned those promises into the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. But through my travels as Ambassador, I meet thousands of women who still need our help. I promise them that they will not be abandoned or forgotten”.
The race was also attended by Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, actress Sarah Chalke, CBS’s The Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez, and W*USA9 morning anchor Andrea Roane, as well as Dr. Branko Terzic, member of the Crown Council and great friend of the Royal Couple.
The Komen Global Race’s <http://ww5.komen.org/findarace.aspx> opening ceremonies included performances by singer/songwriter Candy Coburn, who performed her new single, “Pink Warrior,” and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Circle of Promise Ambassador and singer Lalah Hathaway.
Following the opening ceremony, the Pink Panther started the 5K events from the Start Line stage. After the Race start, the Pink Panther spent the remainder of the morning at Kids for the Cure®, Komen’s special Race day program for children ages 5-12.

The Komen Global Race for the Cure <http://ww5.komen.org/findarace.aspx> marked 20th annual running of the Komen Race for the Cure Series in Washington, D.C., which was formerly known as the Komen National Race for the Cure. Komen for the Cure gathered more than 50,000 people to participate in the Global Race and raise more than $6.1 million, up to 75 percent of which will stay in the D.C. area to address breast cancer disparities in the medically underserved communities.
